An Adventure in Spanish Town, Jamaica

By Mel Swanson

Our team of six men went to New Horizons Home in Spanish Town from February 24 through March 3, 2004.

The purpose of New Horizons is to provide a residential program for young men getting out of orphanages when they turn 18, to help prepare them for adult life. The staff at New Horizons teach them vocational skills, life skills and biblical principles for living. There is a great need for this type of ministry in Jamaica.

The primary purpose of our trip was to replace the roof on the house there in order to prepare the facility to begin ministering to young men. Although it got pretty hot up on the roof, the trip was a wonderful adventure and we saw evidence of God protecting us and working on our behalf.

We completed the roof and also replaced the ceiling in one large room, which was infested with “duck ants”, in addition to a couple of smaller projects. We enjoyed working with some of the Jamaicans and had some other opportunities to interact with people in the neighborhood and at the church we attended on Sunday.

Although we witnessed a slight disturbance in the neighborhood that caused a stir in our front yard, God brought good from it by increasing the good will for New Horizons from many in the community. God blessed our efforts to achieve a small but important step in making this ministry a reality.
